Ukrainian forces struck a major Russian rocket and space facility in the Samara region on Aug. 15, using domestically produced Flamingo cruise missiles, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced. The Ukrainian General Staff later confirmed direct hits and fires at both the Progress center and Savasleyka airfield, noting the latter hosts MiG-31K fighter-interceptors capable of carrying Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 598 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight across 19 regions, as well as in Russian-occupied Crimea and the Black and Azov seas. The attacks disrupted air traffic, prompting temporary restrictions at several Russian airports. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 15 drones heading toward the capital were shot down, while in the Moscow region, falling debris struck a house, injuring a woman and a nine-year-old boy.
Meanwhile, Russia launched 152 attack drones at Ukraine overnight, according to the Ukrainian Air Force, which said 124 were downed or neutralized. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry estimated Russian military casualties in July at 42,860 killed or seriously wounded, the highest monthly toll since January 2025, with total Russian personnel losses since February 2022 reaching 1,461,660. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission identified July 2026 as the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians, with 437 confirmed killed in Russian attacks, including 17 children.
Ukraine’s General Staff also confirmed strikes on a Russian surface-to-air missile system in Kreminna, a drone warehouse in Vuhledar, a logistics warehouse in Lysychansk, and two command posts in Selydove and Mykhailivka. Russian authorities reported additional attacks, including damage to power infrastructure in the Rostov region. Zelenskyy framed the long-range strikes as part of Kyiv’s “long-range sanctions” against Moscow, stating, “Peace is needed, and this must be evident in Russia—through concrete damage to specific facilities.”
