The strikes followed a series of Russian bombings on Friday that killed at least 20 people, including 16 in a daytime drone attack on a busy shopping center in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih. Regional military governor Oleksandr Hanzha said nine people, including two children, remained missing, with 130 wounded, including 23 children. Zelensky condemned the attack as an “act of barbarism” and vowed a response, stating on Telegram that “attacks like these are nothing less than terrorist acts.”
Ukraine carried out retaliatory drone strikes overnight, targeting an oil refinery and a warehouse belonging to Ozon, Russia’s second-largest online retailer, in the Samara region. Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said several people were wounded, and Ozon confirmed its logistics center in Chapayevsk was hit, halting operations. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it downed 457 Ukrainian drones overnight .
Across Ukraine, Russian attacks on Friday and Saturday killed at least six and injured 26, according to Ukrainian authorities. In Kherson Oblast, three died and 13 were wounded; in Donetsk Oblast, one was killed and seven injured. A Russian drone also damaged a border crossing with Moldova in Odesa Oblast, temporarily halting operations. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted three surface-to-air missiles, six cruise missiles, and 182 drones during the overnight assault.
Zelensky urged international support, stating on social media that “every day that Ukraine lacks air defense is a day that results in casualties that could have been avoided.” The United Nations reported that civilian deaths in Ukraine this year have reached their highest level since the early months of the war.
