The European Union approved €114.7 million in emergency aid for Spain on Wednesday to address the migration crisis in its North African exclave of Ceuta, the European Commission announced.

The funding will reinforce border surveillance, upgrade security infrastructure with thermal cameras and underwater drones, and deploy additional staff. It will also support the construction of screening facilities and the return of migrants without legal status, as well as improve reception capacity for unaccompanied minors, according to the Commission .

The decision follows Spain’s request for assistance on Aug. 24, after more than 70,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta on July 30–31, with dozens dying, mostly by drowning. While most have since returned, thousands remain in the exclave, many sleeping on streets and beaches .

The Commission described the aid as an act of solidarity, noting it complements immediate operational support from Frontex, Europol, and the EU Asylum Agency. A joint coordination group with Spanish authorities will hold its first meeting this week .
